We have been talking about markers of class and class in general this past week. I feel as if the North Shore cares about making their markings of class more visible than other places. The saying “keeping up with the Jones’” is very prominent within this area. People feel as if they need to one up one another and get the newest and better things. I feel like it is pretty pathetic because it really does not matter in the grand scheme of things. It is not only with materialistic things though, it also occurs with colleges and careers. It feels as if everyone is judging you based on what colleges you get into and what college you decide to go to. Sometimes I feel like it is hard to live in this area when you’re not at the top of everything all of the time.
What are your feelings about living in the North Shore? What are the major markers of class in your opinion?

Nice blog! I definitly agree with the North Shore being insanely materialistic. The college issue really bugs. Someone asked me recently where one senior was going to college. When I told them University of Kansas, they made a disgusted face. It's annoying that people around here think that just because a shcool is a non-Ivy-league school out East, it's a bad one. We've been brought up in an area that has put false values into our heads, and I think it will be a rude awakening once we leave this area.
I completely agree. Not only college, but the jobs you have, your parents have, the cars you have- make and size- and the belongings you have, clothes, cell phones, ect. Many people in this area are judgmental and materialistic.
This is great! I completely agree, I think that living in the North Shore is completely over-rated. I think that families constantly feel the need to be the best and to better. I think it speaks to insecurities and emptiness (with all due respect). I think that it's so sad that people feel the need to be materialistic and unfortunately it's the way that people are expected to be, just because we do live in the North Shore. I also agree with Abby. I'm not going to lie, I'm very judgemental (unintentionally) when it comes to colleges. I'm really not one to talk, since I definitely will not be the next Yale graduate, but I think that we have been brought up to see Ivy league's and Ivy's only, along with many other materialistic things. Great post Kelly!
